  Rider & Test Requirements

Any learner riding a powered two wheeler on the road must hold a current CBT Certificate unless accommpanied by a DSA approved instructor.

Compulsory Basic Training - CBT

Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) must be taken before you can ride on the road. Once you have successfully completed CBT, and have your Certificate of Completion of an approved training course (DL 196), you can carry on and take additional training to pass your test and qualify for a full motorcycle or moped licence. CBT Must be completed before riding on the road by all learner riders who are resident on mainland Great Britain, islands that are connected to the mainland by road, and the following islands: Wight, North Uist, Lewis, South Uist, Harris, Benbecula, mainland Orkney and mainland Shetland. Residents of all other islands will be exempt from the need to take CBT, but only if riding on roads which are on an exempt island.

There is a misconception that CBT is a test. It's not. It is a training course, which means you'll unlikely to ever fail, but you might take more than the time allotted to you. If others around you are progressing quicker you will be invited to return another day - don't worry - were not here to steel your money, there will be a small charge for insurance/fuel etc - to return but usually a second session will enable you to ride safely on the road. Consider, if you're new to biking or the road, then a 4/5 hour session off road is enough to wear out many! (Parents: please ensure your young riders are uptodate with the Highway Code - remember, if you don't know the rules, you can't play the game!

A CBT certificate is valid for 2 years from the date of issue.

Car drivers, on passing their practical test are 'given' Category P entitlement on their licence. With effect from 1 February 2001, newly qualified drivers will need to complete CBT before this entitlement is valid. This once only CBT is valid for a moped until the expiry of their licence.

Please let us know early (24 hours) if you are unable to attend. The instructor is giving up his time and money to be there for you. If you do not turn up at all, we may not take another booking or at least expect a £20.00 cancelation fee.
